Clic Achieves AFRDI Green and AFRDI Blue Certifications

August 8, 2024

We are proud to announce that Clic has received both AFRDI Green and AFRDI Blue certifications. This dual recognition underscores our unwavering commitment to quality, sustainability, and excellence in our furniture.

What is AFRDI Green?

AFRDI Green (Australasian Furnishing Research and Development Institute) evaluates products on a comprehensive range of sustainability criteria, including environmental impact, resource efficiency, and recyclability. This requires rigorous testing and evaluation processes, involving assessments of the materials used, emissions, and manufacturing processes.

Successfully meeting the requirements of AFRDI 150:2012 Sustainability Standard - Commercial Furniture and achieving AFRDI Green certification is a testament to our dedication to producing environmentally responsible products. It also ensures that our products are compliant with the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and Formaldehyde Minimisation credits in Green Star rating tools.

What is AFRDI Blue?

AFRDI Blue certification focuses on product durability. The process requires extensive testing for general safety, strength, durability, and stability, ensuring that our furniture meets stringent performance criteria and highest standards of functionality and longevity, offering our customers with products they can trust for years to come.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

We are proud to offer furniture that not only exemplifies exceptional quality but also highlights our ongoing efforts to integrate sustainable practices into our product development and manufacturing process.

What is the Difference Between Melamine and Veneer?

June 25, 2024

When selecting your office furniture, you will often encounter the choice between melamine and veneer surfaces. Misconceptions about these two materials are common, while both melamine and veneer are popular in office furniture, they have distinct characteristics and benefits.

Understanding the Basics

Melamine and veneer both involve applying a thin layer to a core panel, such as MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard), particle board, or LDF (Low Density Fibreboard). The key difference lies in the composition of that thin layer.

(Melamine and Veneer Composition)

What Is Melamine?

Melamine is a synthetic resin-based, organic compound (like paper) combined with formaldehyde. It is a thermosetting plastic material that is applied on to a core panel such as particleboard, LDF or MDF.

Melamine is arguably the most sustainable option for cabinets and worktops as it is highly durable, resistant to scratch and has numerous possibilities of hues and patterns.

How To Identify Melamine?

Patterns are printed, ensuring consistency and perfect matching. Melamine wraps around the underside of worktops.

Advantages Of Melamine

  • Variety: Comes in a wide range of imitation prints and colours.

  • Durability: Resistant to fire, heat, and years of commercial use.

  • Maintenance: Easy to clean and doesn’t discolour from heat or age.

  • Versatility: Suitable for various applications.

  • Stability: Offers a highly stable and hard surface.

What Is Veneer?

Timber veneers are made from cutting a fine leaf/slice of timber (tree/log) and applying it to core panels such as MDF, particle board or LDF. Many assume that all veneers are wood veneers, but veneers could also be made from melamine.

Each piece of veneer is unique, reflecting the natural variations in colour and grain that come from the tree it was cut from. Over time, lighter veneers will darken, and darker veneers will lighten, adding to their character.

How To Identify Veneer?

Patterns in veneer are natural, not printed, and may include imperfections like knots, which are part of its charm.

Advantages Of Veneer:

  • Authenticity: Provides the genuine feel of wood.

  • Variety: Can be made from hundreds of different wood types.

  • Sustainability: More affordable and sustainable than solid timber.

  • Design Flexibility: Offers more design possibilities than solid wood.

(Veneer Cutting Method)

Choosing Between Melamine and Veneer

Your choice between melamine and veneer will depend on your desired aesthetic, budget, and the intended use of the furniture. Veneer delivers an authentic wood feel but is more expensive and delicate. In contrast, melamine is highly durable, cost-effective, and easy to maintain.

We have moved away from manufacturing in veneer over the last few years for environmental, economic, practical, functional reasons. Additionally, the range of laminates has expanded into a range of textured finishes which are similar to veneer but far exceed the performance of it.

Whether you opt for the durability and versatility of melamine or the natural beauty of veneer, understanding the differences between these materials will help you make the best choice for your office environment.

An Arena For Innovative Collaboration

November 9, 2023

The design of The Arena room embodies our commitment to being at the forefront of furniture design and innovation by integrating modern tech into the most functional furniture designs.

Our new upholstered Co-Op table base in our charcoal wool and the use of fabric throughout the room help to absorb sound and create a warm and welcoming space. The rear wall in Autex acoustic wall panels further soften the acoustics and layer textures into the space.

The integration of new and emerging video conferencing facilities within this room ensures it is well-equipped for modern collaborative work, including digital sharing and presentations. The custom leaf shaped table top, featured in Polytec’s Tasmanian Oak woodmatt, adds soft lines and organic curves to the space. The shape of the furniture enables a flow of connected conversation with both screen-to-person and person-to-person contact.

Our custom-designed bookshelf serves a dual purpose, maximising storage while providing a focal point for the meeting room and breakout reading space. These spatial functions allow for an organic flow of conversation in both formal meeting settings but also in casual connections between staff which foster the creative brainstorming and team cohesion in the physical workspace.

Blending History and Modernity at Melbourne's Iconic Skipping Girl Building

August 29, 2023

Melbourne, a city where every corner has a story, and every brick holds a secret. One such tale belongs to the Skipping Girl building on 651 Victoria St, Abbotsford Victoria.

This building is not just any landmark. It is fondly known to locals as the home of the famous "Skipping Girl Vinegar" neon sign, a dazzling symbol since the 1930s. Once a beacon for a popular vinegar brand, it has since become a cultural icon, symbolising Melbourne's evolution from an industrial hub to a modern metropolis.

Today, the Skipping Girl building has turned a new chapter. The Stem Group has breathed fresh life into this architectural gem, infusing it with raw urban elements coupled with the sophisticated flair of the modern age.

The result is a space that is both timeless and contemporary, a place where old tales meet new dreams.

From the moment you step inside, you are greeted by the Casali reception counter, which gracefully bows with its radial curve. The backdrop of aged brick walls, witness to decades of Melbourne's growth, is complemented by the modern Stecca Wood panelling in a Notaio Walnut finish. Add the tactile warmth of the Soba chairs wrapped in khaki boucle wool, and you're in for a sensory treat.

Moving through the space, the Benchwork executive desk provides contemporary sophistication, accentuated by our Sonic task chair and the ever-vibrant Mali Chair in green.

The heart of the office beats at the Benchwork and Swish workstations, framed by Arc screens that offer both privacy and a glimpse into creative minds at work. Nestled amidst this, the black Globe sliding door cupboards, adorned with planters, lend a green touch.

Natural light floods the staff area, where our Merge D-end counter table and Calvin chairs beckon for a coffee break chat. One can almost hear the laughter of yesteryears blending with today's banter.

In essence, the rejuvenated Skipping Girl building is a space where history and modernity meet in perfect harmony. It is a place where creativity and innovation can thrive, and where new stories can be written.

So, next time you're in Melbourne, be sure to skip (pun intended!) inside and take a journey through time.

Tricentis: Epitome of Industrial Design

November 8, 2020

Located in the heart of Surry Hills, Sydney, Tricentis’ office is the epitome of industrial design. Ciara Tapia Design successfully emphasises the original architecture of the building by choosing a clean black and white colour palette that perfectly complements the industrial features.

The new office summarises the essence of a modern workspace. From our Swish electric height adjustable workstations in the open office to our Keywork counter tables in the meeting/training rooms, the space is designed to break sedentary behaviours.

Collaboration in all its forms is made possible through various formal and informal settings. Our Dart rectangle table brings the team together in the meeting room while its round sibling gathers people in the office kitchen for casual chats. Our Hush high back lounges are paired with a Dart coffee table, creating a private space for solo work or one-on-one meetings.

Haven for photographer Sebastian Mrugalski, Tricentis office has been carefully designed to create a functional and practical space for the team while paying homage to the heritage of the building.
