Krost Panel Discussion: Designing and Contracting the Responsive, Adaptable Office

October 1, 2024

Krost’s Melbourne showroom recently hosted a panel discussion titled ‘Expanding and Contracting: The Responsive, Adaptable Office’. The event, held in collaboration with Australian Design Review, gathering industry leaders and design professionals to explore the evolving role of flexible office spaces in meeting the dynamic needs of today’s workplaces.

Moderated by Melanie Ting, Senior Interior Designer at Cera Stribley, the panel featured insights from Stephanie Rodas, Senior Associate at Gray Puksand, and Alex Hopkins, Director and Principal Interior Architect at Studio Tate and Carly Krost, Design Manager at Krost.

The panel delved into strategies for creating office environments that can adapt to the rapid changes in today’s work culture. Carly highlighted the growing need for spaces that support hybrid and remote working models, noting that employers are increasingly focused on designing offices that engage their teams and encourage in-office collaboration. "Understanding who uses the space and involving stakeholders from the outset is crucial to designing adaptable environments," said Carly. "Without this, spaces risk becoming outdated."

Alex Hopkins emphasised the importance of designing for flexibility given rising construction costs and extended lead times for custom-built solutions. She advocated for incorporating loose furniture and modular systems that allow clients to easily modify spaces over time, thereby maximising long-term value.

Stephanie Rodas added to the conversation by discussing the complexities of modularity in workplace design. While modular spaces offer versatility, they can sometimes create compliance challenges. She underscored the importance of pilot spaces to test modular solutions before full implementation, helping clients better understand the design process and its impact on functionality.

The panel also addressed how adaptable office designs can cater to neurodiversity and the growing prevalence of hybrid work models. Discussions centred around balancing functional requirements with the need to create inclusive and comfortable environments for both in-office and remote workers.

The evening concluded with networking over traditional Spanish Paella by Simply Spanish and drinks by Liquid Infusion, offering attendees the chance to continue discussions sparked by the panel.

The event underscored the vital role adaptable design plays in modern workplaces and provided actionable strategies for professionals navigating this evolving landscape. Krost remains committed to fostering innovation in workplace design and delivering flexible, future-proof solutions for our clients.
