Krost Panel Discussion: Designing and Contracting the Responsive, Adaptable Office

October 1, 2024

Krost’s Melbourne showroom recently hosted a panel discussion titled ‘Expanding and Contracting: The Responsive, Adaptable Office’. The event, held in collaboration with Australian Design Review, gathering industry leaders and design professionals to explore the evolving role of flexible office spaces in meeting the dynamic needs of today’s workplaces.

Moderated by Melanie Ting, Senior Interior Designer at Cera Stribley, the panel featured insights from Stephanie Rodas, Senior Associate at Gray Puksand, and Alex Hopkins, Director and Principal Interior Architect at Studio Tate and Carly Krost, Design Manager at Krost.

The panel delved into strategies for creating office environments that can adapt to the rapid changes in today’s work culture. Carly highlighted the growing need for spaces that support hybrid and remote working models, noting that employers are increasingly focused on designing offices that engage their teams and encourage in-office collaboration. "Understanding who uses the space and involving stakeholders from the outset is crucial to designing adaptable environments," said Carly. "Without this, spaces risk becoming outdated."

Alex Hopkins emphasised the importance of designing for flexibility given rising construction costs and extended lead times for custom-built solutions. She advocated for incorporating loose furniture and modular systems that allow clients to easily modify spaces over time, thereby maximising long-term value.

Stephanie Rodas added to the conversation by discussing the complexities of modularity in workplace design. While modular spaces offer versatility, they can sometimes create compliance challenges. She underscored the importance of pilot spaces to test modular solutions before full implementation, helping clients better understand the design process and its impact on functionality.

The panel also addressed how adaptable office designs can cater to neurodiversity and the growing prevalence of hybrid work models. Discussions centred around balancing functional requirements with the need to create inclusive and comfortable environments for both in-office and remote workers.

The evening concluded with networking over traditional Spanish Paella by Simply Spanish and drinks by Liquid Infusion, offering attendees the chance to continue discussions sparked by the panel.

The event underscored the vital role adaptable design plays in modern workplaces and provided actionable strategies for professionals navigating this evolving landscape. Krost remains committed to fostering innovation in workplace design and delivering flexible, future-proof solutions for our clients.

Fixed Vs Loose Furniture: What’s Best for Your Space?

September 26, 2024

When it comes to office and commercial spaces, furniture plays a pivotal role in creating an efficient and appealing environment. Understanding the difference between fixed and loose furniture can help you make informed decisions about what’s best for your space.

What Is Fixed Furniture?

Fixed furniture is built into the structure of the building. This category includes items such as built-in desks, bookshelves, and cupboards.

(Executive office with fixed furniture)

Advantages Of Fixed Furniture:

  • Stability and Durability: Fixed furniture is designed to be robust and long-lasting. It’s less likely to be damaged or worn out quickly because it’s securely attached to walls or floors.

  • Space Optimisation: Since fixed furniture is custom-built, it can be designed to fit perfectly into the available space, making the most of every millimetre.

  • Aesthetics: Fixed furniture often offers a seamless look, blending in with the architecture of the building, which can be very appealing in modern office designs.

Disadvantages Of Fixed Furniture:

  • Flexibility: Once installed, fixed furniture is not easily moved or reconfigured. This can be a limitation if your office layout needs to change frequently.

  • Unsustainable: Fixed furniture can be less sustainable than loose as it is often difficult to recycle or reuse when it is no longer needed, leading to increased waste in landfills.

  • Cost: Initial installation costs can be higher because of the custom design and installation process.

3.jpg 4.jpg 2.jpg 6.jpg concept classic, halo, ted.jpg 5.jpg

What Is Loose Furniture?

Loose furniture includes movable items such as freestanding desks, tables, chairs, and shelving units.

(Open plan staff cafeteria with loose furniture)

Advantages Of Loose Furniture:

  • Flexibility: Loose furniture can be easily moved, rearranged, and replaced. This is ideal for dynamic office environments where layouts might need to change frequently.

  • Variety: There is a vast array of styles and designs available, allowing you to change the look and feel of your office without much hassle.

  • Cost-Effective: Generally, loose furniture can be less expensive to purchase and replace compared to fixed furniture.

Disadvantages Of Loose Furniture:

  • Stability: Loose furniture may not be as durable or stable as fixed furniture, and there’s a higher risk of wear and tear from frequent movement.

  • Space Utilisation: Loose furniture might not fit as seamlessly into a space as fixed furniture, potentially leading to less efficient use of space.

Making The Right Choice

The decision between fixed and loose furniture depends on the specific needs and dynamics of your office. Here are some tips to help you decide:

  • Assess Your Space: Consider the size and layout of your office. For smaller, static environments, fixed furniture might be more beneficial. For larger, more dynamic spaces, loose furniture could offer the flexibility you need.

  • Think Long-Term: Consider your long-term needs. If your business plans to grow or frequently change its layout, loose furniture could be a better investment.

  • Combine Both: Many modern offices successfully combine fixed and loose furniture to maximise both stability and flexibility. For example, built-in cupboards paired with movable desks can offer the best of both worlds.

By carefully considering the advantages and disadvantages of fixed and loose furniture, you can create an office space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Contact Krost today to explore our range of high-quality furniture solutions and find the perfect fit for your business.

Krost's Sydney Office Update With 3D Tour: A Blueprint For Workplace Design

December 20, 2023

Our latest Sydney office renovation was more than just an aesthetic upgrade, it's a reflection of modern work culture —flexible, intuitive, and inherently human-centric. To achieve this, we set our goal to design a space that caters to diverse work styles, settings and needs.

Throughout the space, strategically placed meeting and breakout rooms foster collaboration and spontaneous interactions. Our Remi counter table serves as a hub for impromptu catch-ups, while the curve of our Sofi ottomans create a welcoming space for informal chats.

Each room is named and can be easily booked in our calendar system:

The Loft - A feature collaborative space in our Mascot office, carefully designed to offer a dynamic environment tailored for both brief stand-up huddles and teamwork-driven sessions.

The Arena - Embodies our commitment to being at the forefront of furniture design and innovation by integrating modern tech into specially designed, functional furniture.

The Hub - A quiet space that offers a refreshing change from the workstation zone, providing a focused work environment for teams looking for a change.

The Home Suite - A perfect blend of comfort and function, where private chats and casual catch-ups combine seamlessly with productivity, away from the buzz of the office.

The Booth - Intentionally designed to nurture a collaborative and undistracted environment, perfect for brief touchpoints or extensive brainstorming sessions.

The Nook - For hyper-focused task immersion, tailored for small offices, it cleverly maximises efficiency without compromising on style.

Highlighted in the centre of the office is our new Clic workstation, featuring a sleek black rounded profile and a Coastal Oak Woodmatt worktop from Polytec. To enhance privacy and infuse greenery into the workspace, we've incorporated custom joinery planter boxes that elegantly divide the workstations, as well as our Cubby planters at the foot of the desks.

Our open workstation area is equipped with Archi chairs, meticulously crafted for supreme ergonomic comfort and flexibility. Complementing this setup is a dynamic hot desking spine, flanked by planter box lockers. This not only introduces a touch of greenery but also provides personalised storage for our staff.

Experience our complete office transformation from beginning to end here and explore our Sydney showroom today through the immersive 3D tour below.

Leveraging the material's inherent strength, Vada delivers a clean and minimalist storage solution with customisable storage and display options, including interlocking shelves and cupboards that contribute to a sophisticated and efficient executive office setup.

In this executive space, our Halo table with a cantilever top provides a conducive environment for intimate discussions, effective collaboration, and swift decision-making within a private and controlled setting.

Surrounding the meeting table, our Alex chairs in charcoal cashmere not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also elevates the executive's ability to lead efficient and focused meetings.

Together, these elements create a technologically advanced and ergonomically designed office environment that supports innovation and productivity.
