PRODUCT CERTIFICATIONS: WHAT DO THEY MEAN?

June 1, 2017

When shopping for your office furniture, you might come across logos and acronyms and wonder what they actually mean.

Here's a quick guide to some of the common ones in Australia.

AFRDI: the Australian Furnishing Research & Development Institute (AFRDI) is an independent not-for-profit technical organisation that provides standards, testing, product certifications and research for buyers and sellers of furniture based on Australian and New Zealand and other well-recognised standards.

The AFRDI Certification guarantees that a product meets the criterias of strength, durability, stability, function (the product is fit for purpose including ergonomic and basic safety criteria), flammability (where appropriate), reasonable finish and workmanship.

Suppliers of AFRDI certified products enter into an agreement with the institute and agree to maintain the quality of their products, advise the institute of any changes made to the certified product, undergo random checks and submit goods for audit or investigation at least every three years.

GECA: Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) runs Australia's only independent, not-for-profit, multi-sector eco-labelling program and is the only Australian member of the Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN).

The certification ensures that a product meets social and environmental performance standards, was manufactured with little impact on the environment and human health.

Just like for the AFRDI certifications, GECA labelled products are submitted to regular surveillance audits.

ISO 14001:2015 is a family of standards related to environmental management that exists to help organisations minimize how their operations and processes negatively affect the environment. ISO 14001 details how our products are designed and manufactured with a viewpoint on maximising our environmental efficiencies and also gives us a framework for continual improvement.

ISO 9001:2008 is a family of quality management system standards designed to help organizations ensure that they meet the needs of customers and other stakeholders while meeting statutory and regulatory requirements related to a product or program. ISO 9001 ensures our quality assurance systems are continually improved and adhered to.

With regular audits in place, ISO 14001 & ISO 9001 helps maximise our efficiency whilst also reducing our footprint on the environment.

If you are looking for certified products for your next fit-out, don't hesitate to ask us. We have a range of products that are AFRDI certified from our Benchwork and Vast workstations to our very popular Miro chairs, Future chairs, Economy chairs, our Logic monitor arms and many more (certifications are listed on each product page). We can also provide you with GECA certified steel storage options.

If you'd like to find out more, drop us a line here.

Doors Open at Macarthur Mazda

May 18, 2017

From its world class set up, to its sophisticated furnishings Mazda's new showroom incorporates all the elements to impress. Using a host of our products and custom made joinery, we created a solution that embraces style and practicality.

Featuring our products in a beautiful palette of white, wood grain, grey and blue, a consistent aesthetic was carried throughout the entire space.

Desks in the showroom and executive offices were a classic combination of Merge and Dart organic spine desks, while back end offices featured a selection of Benchwork and Keywork workstations, teamed with Miro and Tang chairs.

Storage was also well catered for, with an extensive array of custom joinery being created for executive offices and a selection of steel and melamine storage in other areas.

The waiting and reception areas were designed with customers' comfort in mind, resulting in warm and inviting zones that boast a variety of our breakout furniture from Jena chairs to Hush lounges, Dart coffee tables, Tang chairs & Halo tables.

Fully powered Oslo counter tables and Zorro stools offer the perfect place for customers/staff interactions, informal meetings, lunch breaks and activity based working. The addition of a Trak accessory rail with planters and screens gave the tables a touch of lux and a heightened sense of privacy.

Our Tang and Dart ranges were also standout pieces, with their distinctly shaped legs offering a bold and modern touch that fits with the brand's image. Our Sax chairs in a custom tanned colour were also a nice addition, standing high above the showroom and paired with our Oslo table in the director’s office.

Mazda’s new showroom is set to fulfil the company's everyday needs whilst also offering a platform for success for years to come.

When Functionality meets Design

May 10, 2017

Another successful project was completed at Hitch Advisory, Bondi Junction.

Combining smart storage solutions through our Spine units and eye catching black Dart legs in the executive offices with views extending all the way to Bondi Beach, this space has been designed with flair.

A simple but stunning black and white vision was the centre of the design for the open office, featuring our Benchwork workstations and Trak system powder coated in black, Miro chairs, black Globe mobile pedestal against contrasting white Globe sliding door cupboards and the space saving Logic Monitor arms.

Accents of colours were added through greenery in our Globe planters and a sophisticated touch of gold around the office.  The meeting and waiting spaces also feature our black Dart conference table and Zorro chairs upholstered in our house grey fabric tying in perfectly with the monochromatic theme of the space.

Hot ? Cold? How to Get it Right in the Office

April 27, 2017

Too hot? Too cold? It seems impossible to please everyone in the office when it comes to temperature.

We are all guilty of complaining about it and trying to take control over the dial.

In an era of open office layout, pleasing everyone is near impossible, so how can we make the workspace more comfortable for all?

Studies show that productivity can drop off by as much as 20% if the temperature is judged uncomfortable as well as contributing to fatigue, heat and cold related illnesses.

So figuring out the right temperature is not just a matter of stopping the complaints, it is also one of health and well-being.

As a rule of thumb, the office temperature should sit somewhere between 20 and 26 degrees Celsius. However the felt temperature under the same digit will highly vary according to the season, the level of activity, the amount and type of clothing worn by employees, the location of their desk in the office, the outside air temperature or the humidity level.

A study run by the Netherlands also revealed that women, who produce about 30% less body heat than men, prefer temperatures about 3 degrees warmer than their male colleagues.

With the Australian weather being rather unpredictable lately, here are a few tips to help make the workplace a little more enjoyable for everyone:

- Regulate your air conditioning unit for temperature (between 22 and 26 degrees) and for humidity (between 40 and 60%)

- Check that the air conditioning reaches all areas in the office and get it serviced regularly

- Avoid installing workstations directly under air conditioning outlets

- Direct airflow away from people by installing deflectors on air vents

- Assess the level of sunlight and heat coming through the windows, you may need to apply a window treatment to block out the light or simply install some blinds

- Avoid having too many employees as well as heat generating equipment in small rooms

- Ensure adequate air flow throughout the office to avoid a feeling of stuffiness. On the other hand too much air flow will cause draughts. A desirable air flow sits between 0.1 and 0.2 metres per second
